The User Clock, (presented by Ben Crothers at the Agile Australia 2019 conference,) provides a visual approach to mapping how and when a product is used over the daily time span of the customer or user.

The Approach

The approach starts with an empty User Clock with the centre updated with persona attributes such as name, age, occupation, motivations etc.

User Clock

The next stage is to map out the daily activities of the customer and understand what they do on a regular average day. This might be sleeping, commuting to work, meetings, lunch, working on a computer etc. etc.

User Clock

Moods of the customer throughout the day are then added to indicate the emotional energy of the customer over time during their typical day, which may provide some insights into their moods when using the product.

User Clock

Finally, the time slice of the customers' typical day when they use the product is added.

User Clock

Overall, the approach provides a layered perspective of who the customer is, what their typical day looks like and when they might use the product.
