Note & Vote

To avoid the “group think” and herding behaviour when Dot Voting or polling responses from the team, ask them to silently write down the item they want to vote for, and then when everyone has written down their responses, ask them to place their votes on the board or flip chart paper.

The activity of recording their own thoughts independently of each other allows for individual responses rather than following the leader and clustering.

When presenting the responses on a piece of flip chart paper, there may well be more than one strong indication or idea that resonates strongly with the team. This should be recognised and understood with some discussion as to why the multiple clusters exist and what motivations led to the outcomes.
